Ivorian negotiators outline key priorities for COP29 in Baku
Negotiators from Côte d'Ivoire are actively preparing for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), scheduled to take place from November 11 to 22 in Baku.
To enhance their skills, a seminar was recently held in Bonoua, aimed at equipping Ivorian negotiators for effective participation, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Eric-Michel Assamoi, Director of Climate Change Department at the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Côte d'Ivoire, highlighted the country's key priorities for the Baku conference. These include the establishment of a loss and damage fund, improved mobilization and access to climate finance, and fostering "South-South" and "North-South" cooperation.
Assamoi also stressed the importance of ensuring that all countries have access to climate technology.
He urged negotiators to focus on crucial areas such as mitigation, adaptation, market mechanisms, and transparency as they prepare for the upcoming discussions.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will take place in Azerbaijan this November. This decision was made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Baku is expected to welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international attendees over the two-week event.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The COP, or “Conference of the Parties,” is the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC, which has 198 member states. Unless otherwise decided, the COP convenes annually; the first COP was held in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat based in Bonn.
