Jirayr Liparityan: Armenians need to accept what Ilham Aliyev proposes
Ex-advisor to Armenia's first president Jirayr Liparityan made remarks concerning Azerbaijan's proposals for a peace treaty while speaking at the Centre for Armenian Studies in Massachusetts.
"In fact, the international community, starting from the UN Security Council, including the Minsk Group and the OSCE, including our friends Russia, France, Iran, Greece, and Cyprus, have always said that Garabagh will not be independent, that they will not recognise its independence, and that it is part of Azerbaijan's territory. This is the message of the international community that we have not listened to. We listened only to ourselves, no one will come to our aid," he said, according to Caliber.Az.
"You can see what is happening in Garabagh. Can we imagine how five members of the UN Security Council, four of which are Russia, France, the US, and the UK, say every day that they are concerned about the 'blockade' (editorial inverted commas) of Garabagh, but they can't even pass a resolution forcing Azerbaijan to open it (the road - Ed.). We don't have the luxury of saying, "I want this, I want that".
I believe that signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan is possible. We set ourselves unrealistic goals every time and tend to lose more. Aliyev had many options after he won the war. But we pretended we didn't lose the war. What he offered then was far better than what he offers now. What he is offering now is quite feasible," Liparityan said.
