Kamikaze drone attacks US military base in Syria's north-east PICTURE
A kamikaze drone has attacked the US military base in Syria's Kharab al-Jir, the first such attack since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government.
The drone was intercepted and downed by US air defense systems before it could reach the base, Caliber.Az reports citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
The base, located in the rural area of Rumeilan in northeastern Syria, previously served as a hub for "international coalition" forces operating in Syria and Iraq as the region traditionally has been controlled by Kurdish rebels.
US forces stationed at the base have been placed on high alert in response to the attack and tasked to prepare for similar attacks. So far there has been no reports of any group claiming responsibility for the strike.
Caliber.Az recalls that the last time the base had come under attack was on December 4, only several days before the ousting of Bashar al-Assad and the takeover of Damascus by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebels that are currently the dominating force in the country.
