Karabakh, Zangazur, Nakhchivan’s flora, fauna well represented in Red Book’s new edition - official
Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Deputy Minister Vugar Karimov has said that the flora and fauna of Karabakh, Zangazur and Nakhchivan are well represented in the new edition of the Red Book.
He made the remarks at the presentation of the third edition of the Red Book on May 23, Caliber.Az reports.
"Due to the efforts made in Azerbaijan, more than 50 species of flora and 42 kinds of fauna have been removed from the list of endangered or endangered species… In addition, endangered species of Karabakh and East Zangazur are widely represented there," he said.
He noted that the flora and fauna of Nakhchivan were also widely represented in the new edition.
The deputy minister said that Azerbaijan will establish reservations in Karabakh and East Zangazur.
"Reservations will be created on the territory of Karabakh and East Zangazur to preserve rare and endangered species of flora and fauna," Karimov added.
According to him, they will help preserve the unique nature of these places, which has suffered greatly during Armenia's decades-long occupation.
In addition, five reservations will be created in the Baku vicinity, on the Absheron Peninsula, Karimov said.
The book includes approximately 250 species of fauna and 460 species of flora.
Armenia’s three-decade occupation of Azerbaijani territories extensively damaged the ecosystem, wildlife and natural resources in and around the Karabakh region. Armenians also resorted to large-scale acts of ecological terror in regions they had to leave under the 2020 trilateral November ceasefire deal that stipulated the return of Azerbaijan’s occupied territories.
