Kazakh president sets vision for high-tech future with nuclear power
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has emphasised the need to accelerate the construction of several nuclear power plants, aiming to transform the country into a leader in nuclear energy.
"We must speed up the process of building nuclear power stations. As I mentioned in an interview, we plan to build two major plants, possibly three. Our goal is to turn Kazakhstan into a nation with advanced nuclear energy, where artificial intelligence operates alongside full-scale digitalisation," Tokayev stated during a visit to a Project Office in Astana, Caliber.Az reports, citing the presidential office.
In a recent interview with Ana Tili (Native Language) newspaper, President Tokayev reiterated the need for a large-capacity nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan. He did not rule out the possibility of constructing a second, and potentially a third, nuclear power plant in the near future.
On October 6, 2024, Kazakhstan held a referendum to assess public support for nuclear power plant construction. The proposal was backed by 71.12 per cent of voters, with a voter turnout of 63.66 per cent.
