Adygea incident caused by Russian air defence missile, independent media says PHOTO/VIDEO

21 January 2026 12:46

At least eleven people were injured in Russia’s Republic of Adygea overnight when a residential building in Novaya Adygea was struck by a Russian air defence missile, independent media reported. The incident, which also caused a fire at the building and a nearby parking lot, occurred amid heightened drone activity in the region. Separately, drones ignited a fire at the Afipsky oil refinery in neighboring Krasnodar Krai, though no casualties were reported.

Adygea Governor Murat Kumpilov said a residential building in the Takhtamukaysky District was damaged after a drone was detected in the area. “Eleven people, including two children, were injured,” he said.

Kumpilov added that the incident caused a fire at an apartment building and a nearby parking lot in the village of Novaya Adygea, prompting an emergency response by local services.

Russian state media reported that the fire was the result of a Ukrainian drone strike on the residential building. Ukrainian officials have not commented on the incident.

However, the independent Russian outlet ASTRA disputed this account, reporting that the damage was caused by a Russian air defence missile. According to ASTRA, eyewitness video, residents’ accounts, and open-source intelligence analysis indicate that debris consistent with an air defence interceptor was found at the site.

The incident occurred amid reports of drone activity and air defence operations in the area, and responsibility for the damage has not been independently confirmed.

In a separate incident overnight, drones struck the Afipsky oil refinery in neighboring Krasnodar Krai, igniting a fire at the facility, Russian media and local authorities reported.

Regional officials said fragments of drones fell onto the refinery’s grounds, causing the blaze. The regional operations headquarters reported that there were no casualties and no damage to critical infrastructure, adding that the fire was swiftly extinguished.

The Afipsky refinery, one of the largest in southern Russia, has been repeatedly targeted in previous drone attacks, including strikes reported in September and November last year that also resulted in fires at the facility.

While Kyiv has not commented on either incident, Ukraine has regularly carried out long-range strikes against military and industrial facilities inside Russia, primarily using domestically developed drones and frequently targeting oil and gas infrastructure—a key source of revenue supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
