Konya mayor: WUF13 taking place at critical moment for regions worldwide

Konya Mayor Ughur İbrahim Altay said the 13th session of the World Urban Forum 13 is taking place at a critical moment for cities and regions worldwide, as global governance faces growing challenges.

Speaking at the Assembly of Local and Regional Authorities held as part of the forum in Baku, Altay said municipalities are increasingly responsible for addressing key societal needs, including human rights protection, affordable housing, migration, climate justice, and social solidarity, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

“Through public services, local authorities are prioritising equality and human dignity as one of the key pillars of public policy. Today’s event is of great significance in terms of developing the principles of ‘local multilateralism’,” he said.

He stressed that strengthening international cooperation among local and regional authorities is essential at a time when global governance structures are under pressure.

“The international movement comprising local and regional authorities is at the forefront of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. As we approach the 2030 targets, cooperation with the UN has accelerated the implementation of initiatives at the local level. At the same time, concrete and investment projects are moving forward. Housing provision is one of the key components of social well-being, equality and sustainable development,” Altay noted.

He also referred to preparations for the COP31 climate conference, which will be held in Antalya this November, urging that climate commitments be translated into practical, locally implemented projects.

“We must ensure that climate commitments are translated into concrete, place-based projects and put into practice. Local and regional authorities are already playing a leading role in the areas of adaptation, sustainability, sustainable mobility and the creation of inclusive urban communities,” he added.
