Kremlin spox: Russia will not meddle in Georgia's internal affairs
Russian authorities have no intention of interfering in Georgia's internal matters, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated, according to Caliber.Az citing Russian media reports.
Large-scale protests against the proposed "foreign agents" law have been ongoing in Tbilisi since April 15, led by opposition parties, NGOs, and civil activists who label the bill a "Russian law" and accuse the government of shifting its foreign policy. The EU, US, NATO, and other Western partners have urged Georgia not to pass the bill.
However, on May 14 Georgian lawmakers passed the bill in the third reading.
Peskov emphasized, "This is absolutely Georgia's internal affair; we in no way want to interfere there."
He noted the Kremlin recognizes the Georgian authorities' desire to protect their country from external interference, mirroring the stance of many countries globally. However, Peskov also highlighted visible attempts from outside to interfere in Georgia's affairs, including threats of sanctions over the adoption of certain laws.
"What is this if not direct interference in Georgia's internal affairs?" Peskov remarked.
