Kremlinx spox: EU's conditions tighten Serbia's grip BRICS offers freedom and respect
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov criticized the European Union for its constant imposition of conditions on Serbia, which he suggested undermines the country's autonomy.
In a conversation with journalists, he highlighted Serbia's growing interest in BRICS, a group characterized by mutual respect and consideration for the interests of its members, contrasting it with the EU's approach, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Peskov's remarks followed Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin's assertion that joining BRICS represents a viable alternative for Belgrade compared to EU membership. “Indeed, Serbia's hands are being wrung,” Peskov stated, emphasizing that the EU frequently ties cooperation to specific conditions that may not align with Serbia's interests.
In contrast, he noted, “No conditions are imposed by BRICS on anyone. This is a format of interaction based on mutual respect and a willingness to address each other’s concerns and interests. It’s a different kind of interaction.” He reiterated that there’s no ultimatum involved in BRICS participation, making it an attractive option for many countries.
Peskov expressed understanding of the pressures Serbia faces, assuring that he believes the nation will make decisions that best serve the interests of its people.
