Leader of Georgian opposition party steps down due to health reasons
Levan Khabeishvili, the leader of Georgia's "National Movement" opposition party, has announced his resignation from his position citing health concerns.
This decision was communicated during a special briefing held at the party's headquarters, according to Ekho Kavkaza.
Khabeishvili will be assuming a new role as a member of the party's political council. In his stead, Tina Bokuchava, the current chair of the National Movement parliamentary faction, will be taking over as party chairman. Khabeishvili expressed confidence in Bokuchava's ability to lead the party to victory in the upcoming elections.
Bokuchava, in her address, stressed the significance of the current political landscape, urging unity among opposition forces to safeguard Georgia's European future. The announcement follows recent unrest, including Khabeishvili's detention and assault during a protest against legislation concerning "foreign agents."
This transition underscores the party's commitment to maintaining momentum despite challenges, with a focus on securing Georgia's path towards European integration.
