Matthew Bryza: Holding elections ahead of COP29 to strengthen Azerbaijan's global standing
Matthew Bryza, a member of the Board of Directors at the Jamestown Foundation, emphasized the significance of Azerbaijan’s upcoming parliamentary elections in light of the country’s recent sovereignty restoration.
“Last September, Azerbaijan fully restored its sovereignty. By quickly and successfully eliminating the factors that posed a constant threat to the country's territorial integrity, Azerbaijan has significantly increased the importance of the upcoming parliamentary elections,” Bryza said in a statement to the Azerbaijani independent media centre “Seçki-2024”, Caliber.Az reports.
Bryza highlighted that the snap elections for the Milli Majlis (Parliament), covering the entire territory of Azerbaijan, are a pivotal element in the nation’s democratic progress and could have broader regional implications.
He further remarked, “Holding elections ahead of COP29 will further strengthen Azerbaijan's global standing. I welcome this process.”
The upcoming elections are seen as a key step in consolidating Azerbaijan's democratic development and enhancing its international profile.
