Mattias Frumerie aims for momentum from COP29 to foster climate initiatives

The summit of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will provide a platform for countries to demonstrate how far they have come in developing their climate plans.

Sweden's climate ambassador and chief negotiator at COP29 from that country, Mattias Frumerie, made the remark in an interview with Report.

"At COP29 we want to see momentum in the development of new NDCs (nationally determined climate change contributions)...And of course the new, as we call it, NCQG (New Collective Quantified Climate Finance Goal) will be a key element and outcome of COP29," he said.

In this sense, Frumeri said, COP sessions can be a platform to map progress made so far and also identify remaining obstacles.

"All these different initiatives have an important role to play in showcasing the year's achievements and showing how we can work even harder to ensure accelerated climate action around the world," he added.

Baku has been chosen as the host city for COP29, marking a significant milestone in Azerbaijan's commitment to environmental stewardship and global climate action.

The announcement was made following rigorous deliberations by the international community, recognizing Baku's strategic position as a key player in advancing sustainability efforts on a global scale. This decision underscores the confidence placed in Azerbaijan's ability to facilitate constructive dialogue and catalyze collective action towards addressing pressing environmental challenges.

COP29, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is slated to bring together policymakers, scientists, activists, and stakeholders from around the world to engage in critical discussions on mitigating climate change and charting a course towards a sustainable future.

Hosting COP29 represents a significant opportunity for Azerbaijan to showcase its dedication to environmental conservation and showcase its efforts in renewable energy, conservation, and sustainable development.
