WUF13: Azerbaijani MP urges global parliamentary cooperation on urban policy
At the sidelines of the World Urban Forum 13 (WUF13) in Baku, a member of parliament has called for stronger international cooperation between legislatures to advance evidence-based urban policy.
Parvana Valiyeva, a deputy of the Milli Majlis (Parliament), proposed a parliamentary roundtable held as part of the forum, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
She said the initiative should focus on building scientifically grounded data to support parliamentary decision-making, as well as using it to promote sustainable urban development. Valiyeva also highlighted the importance of joint research in legislative practice.
“Parliaments, by virtue of their direct contact with voters, are in a unique position to assess how laws function in practice,” she said. “By studying successful legislative approaches and sharing experience, we can create a valuable guidance framework for parliamentarians across different countries and political systems.”
Valiyeva added that deeper cooperation would not only facilitate the exchange of views but also help develop a more effective urban policy jointly. She called for continued parliamentary dialogue with UN-Habitat and other global partners, both during WUF13 and beyond.
