Media: Azerbaijan may recall its ambassador from Iran again

17 September 2024 14:12

The execution of the sentence for the terrorist who attacked the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran's capital Tehran has been delayed for almost a year.

If the death sentence is not implemented soon, Azerbaijan may once again recall its ambassador from Iran, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The terrorist was arrested and sentenced to death on October 2, 2023. Despite nearly a year passing since the sentencing, the execution date remains uncertain. This issue continues to be a major concern for Azerbaijani society and is under constant media scrutiny.

The embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran was attacked on January 27, 2023, at around 08:00 (GMT+3:30). The perpetrator passed by the guard post with a Kalashnikov rifle and opened fire inside the embassy, while its staff tried to neutralise him.

The head of the embassy's security service, Orkhan Asgarov, was killed in the attack, while two guards were injured. Shortly after, a suspect was detained by Iranian police. The Azerbaijani State Security Service opened a criminal investigation of the attack. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev condemned the attack. The Azerbaijani side regarded the incident as a "terrorist act".

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry announced the evacuation of the embassy personnel in Tehran. On January 29 Azerbaijan evacuated most of the embassy staff from Tehran and suspended the embassy's operation.
