Minister: Azerbaijan, Armenia made significant progress in peace process

26 December 2025 16:06

Azerbaijan has reported significant progress in its peace process with Armenia over the course of 2025, according to Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.

Speaking at a review of the country’s foreign policy activities for the year, Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan’s active international engagement under President Ilham Aliyev, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

“Under the leadership of President Aliyev, Azerbaijan strengthened its position on the international stage and expanded its diplomatic presence. Considerable progress has been made in the peace process,” he said.

Bayramov emphasised that Azerbaijan’s efforts to promote international peace and stability, develop economic cooperation, and engage in mediation have contributed to the country’s growing global influence.

Over the year, Azerbaijan held political consultations with 52 countries and signed 191 agreements with 41 nations.

Relations with the United States showed positive developments, he noted, with President Aliyev’s visit to Washington in August being particularly significant. “During the visit, a memorandum of understanding was signed, and reciprocal visits took place,” Bayramov said.

Regarding ties with Russia, the minister acknowledged that dialogue continued despite ongoing tensions. He cited the meeting between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Russia in Dushanbe on October 9 as playing an important role in easing relations.

Azerbaijan also maintained intensive contacts with Türkiye, Georgia, and Iran throughout the year. Bayramov noted that President Aliyev made three official visits to Türkiye, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made four visits to Azerbaijan.

Bilateral and multilateral cooperation, he said, provided a strong impetus for Azerbaijan’s development. President Aliyev undertook 14 visits to Central Asian countries in 2025, with reciprocal visits by regional leaders to Baku.

Looking ahead, Azerbaijan is set to host the 12th European Union Political Community Conference in 2028, reflecting positive dynamics in EU-Azerbaijan cooperation. “A new partnership agreement is currently under discussion. Azerbaijan is a strategic partner for ten European countries,” Bayramov added.

The minister also highlighted Azerbaijan’s engagement with international organisations, noting that the country successfully secured election victories in 14 candidacies during 2025, reinforcing its international stature.

On humanitarian efforts, Bayramov said Azerbaijan sent 200 tonnes of aid to Syria and provided 75 million manats in assistance to Ukraine. The country also continues to award educational grants to communities with which it shares ethnic and cultural ties.
