Minister: Azerbaijan to use experience of NAM to successfully host COP29
Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev has said that Azerbaijan will use the experience of chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) for the successful holding of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will be held in Baku in November this year.
He made the remarks during a forum on climate action organised by the Youth Organisation of the Non-Aligned Movement, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
"At COP29, we can successfully utilise the experience gained during Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the NAM. Azerbaijan is working to ensure that all countries speak out in favour of mutual interests and call on all parties to fulfil international commitments to combat climate change," he said.
"In 2023, we also held a summit on post-pandemic recovery. The parallels between COVID-19 and our collective fight against climate change are significant. It showed us the importance of the world coming together to tackle a common challenge and ensuring that our response is tailored to each country's individual circumstances," the minister added.
He said youth, as the next generation's global leader, can come together to share knowledge and develop the common skills needed to tackle global challenges.
"This November, the world will gather in Baku to conclude a year of climate negotiations. The goal of COP29 is to achieve a comprehensive outcome. That is why the voices of representatives of the younger generation, who will be most affected by climate change, should be heard at this year's negotiations," Babayev said.
