Minister: Georgia, Azerbaijan strengthen economic ties via transportation partnership

18 February 2025 20:56

Georgian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Levan Davitashvili has said that one of the key areas of economic cooperation between Georgia and Azerbaijan is partnership in the transportation sector.

“Today, a meeting has been held in Tbilisi with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Rashad Nabiyev, who is on a working visit to Georgia. During the meeting, plans for the current year were discussed,” he told journalists, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

He noted that the progress of the modernization of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was one of the main topics of discussion during the meeting.

"We reported that the work is in the final stages, and this route will be fully operational this year. We also discussed the creation of a joint venture between Georgia and Azerbaijan, which will manage this infrastructure. This will allow us to utilize the route more efficiently and attract more cargo," Davitashvili said.

He also highlighted that special attention was given to the role of the Middle Corridor, enhancing its competitiveness, and the activities carried out with active participation from both sides to attract additional cargo.

"This will enable our countries to create greater added value. Furthermore, we discussed the issue of railway passenger transport between Georgia and Azerbaijan, as this mode of transport plays a key role in tourism development. During the meeting with my Azerbaijani counterpart, we also reviewed the forecast for transport volumes for this year. It was important to exchange plans and visions to coordinate efforts and enhance our competitiveness both regionally and globally," the Georgian minister added.
