NATO chief sounds alarm on worst-ever security threat, calls for boosted military spending
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that the current security situation within the North Atlantic Alliance is the worst he has experienced in his lifetime.
Speaking at the Carnegie Europe, Rutte expressed grave concerns about the current state of global security, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"The security situation now is the worst in my entire life," Rutte declared. He further noted that, in his view, the events unfolding in Ukraine could easily be mirrored in Brussels, underscoring the heightened threat faced by NATO.
Rutte also emphasized the growing tension between NATO, Russia, and China, describing it as an "existential confrontation" for the alliance.
In a stark call to action, Rutte suggested that European pension funds and social security benefits should be redirected towards arms production to strengthen NATO's military capabilities. He underscored that NATO's military spending should exceed 3 per cent of GDP, marking a significant shift in the alliance’s defence priorities.
