Nepal’s president set to attend COP29 in Baku
President of Nepal, Ram Chandra Paudel, is set to visit Azerbaijan to participate in the COP29 conference, scheduled to take place from November 11 to 22, 2024 in Baku.
As reported by the Minister of Forests and Environment, Aina Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, Nepal will be represented at the highest level, with President Paudel leading the delegation, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Thakuri stated, “The government has decided to ensure a high level of participation at the conference to highlight the significance of this event for the authorities.”
She noted that the upcoming conference is expected to play a crucial role in shaping and implementing governmental decisions aimed at achieving climate targets.
Notably, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) is scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan this November. This decision was made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023.
Baku is anticipated to host around 70,000 to 80,000 international participants over the two-week event.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, seeks to avert harmful human interference with the climate system. The COP, which comprises 198 member states, serves as the supreme decision-making body overseeing the UNFCCC's implementation.
The COP convenes annually, with the inaugural meeting held in Berlin in March 1995, and its secretariat located in Bonn.
