New Caledonia’s FLNKS holds crucial congress amidst political turmoil

24 March 2024 17:44

In a significant political gathering over the weekend, the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) convened its 42nd congress in Dumbéa, marking a pivotal moment for New Caledonia's independence movement.

Representatives from various components of the FLNKS, including the Caledonian Union, Kanak Liberation Party, Oceanian Democratic Rally, Progressive Union in Melanesia, along with the USTKE and the Labor Party, assembled to strategize on critical issues shaping the region's future, Caliber.Az reports citing an article published by Franceinfo.

Central to the discussions was the contentious constitutional bill aimed at unfreezing the provincial electorate, a move vehemently opposed by the FLNKS. The congress sought to forge a unified stance against what FLNKS executives termed as an "umpteenth attempt at forceful passage," emphasizing the imperative need for regional and international support, including that of the United Nations.

The bill, currently under scrutiny by senators and slated for public session examination on March 26, proposes significant changes to voting eligibility, eliciting a flurry of proposed amendments. This bill proposes extending voting rights to individuals born in or domiciled in New Caledonia for at least ten years, drawing support from the State and non-independence movements. FLNKS senator Robert Xowie, backed by the Republican Citizen and Environmentalist - Kanaky group, spearheaded opposition efforts, even initiating a motion against the text's examination.

Beyond the electoral reform, the congress agenda encompassed broader themes including discussions on the region's future, external relations, unity among separatists, and pertinent political and institutional developments.

The outcome of the congress holds critical importance for both the State and non-independence factions amidst a multifaceted backdrop. Paris eagerly anticipates the resolution of the crisis in the metallurgical sector through a proposed pact on New Caledonian nickel, negotiated over four months. Concurrently, elected officials from Loyalist and Rally groups declared a boycott of what they deemed "undemocratic institutions," while fuel depots remain blockaded in protest against the tariff balance tax introduced by the Caledonian government.

As stakeholders await the outcome of the FLNKS congress, New Caledonia finds itself at a crossroads, navigating through complex political terrain while grappling with pressing economic challenges and societal discontent.
