During the Conference on Mine Action in Ukraine held in Tokyo, Japan, Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA), held a series of high-level meetings with international partners to strengthen cooperation in mine clearance and humanitarian demining.

Suleymanov met with Tobias Privitelli, Director of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), to discuss the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Support for Mine Action Activities in Azerbaijan signed earlier this year, as well as potential areas for further collaboration, Caliber.Az reports per ANAMA.

At another session, he met with Rothna Buth, Executive Director of the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC), to explore ways to expand cooperation between ANAMA, ARMAC, and the mine action agencies of its member states in addressing mine threats.

Discussions with Rodrigue Vinet, representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), focused on strategies to minimize the environmental impact of demining operations.

Suleymanov also held talks with Masaki Ishikawa, Deputy Director-General of the European Affairs Bureau at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reviewing prospects for Japan’s support for humanitarian demining initiatives in Azerbaijan.
