Remembrance Day, observed annually on September 27, honours Azerbaijani servicemen and civilians who lost their lives during the 44-day Patriotic War of 2020. The date marks the start of hostilities in the Second Karabakh War, when Azerbaijani forces launched counter-offensives in response to Armenian aggression.
The day was established by presidential decree on December 2, 2020, following Azerbaijan’s victory and the restoration of territories under Armenian occupation for nearly three decades.
Commemorations include a nationwide minute of silence at noon, the raising of national flags, illuminations of public buildings, and memorial ceremonies at Martyrs’ Alleys. The day symbolises both mourning for the nearly 2,900 fallen servicemen and the resilience, unity, and determination of the Azerbaijani people.
