New York–Ganja: Azerbaijani delegation returns from UNGA on Remembrance Day Hikmet Hajiyev’s post

27 September 2025 11:17

The Azerbaijani delegation, led by President Ilham Aliyev, returned to Azerbaijan from New York, on September 27 – Remembrance Day, Presidential Aide Hikmet Hajiyev said.

The delegation had traveled to New York to participate in the opening of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

According to Hajiyev's post on X, the delegation’s flight route was from New York to Ganja, Caliber.Az reports.

Remembrance Day, observed annually on September 27, honours Azerbaijani servicemen and civilians who lost their lives during the 44-day Patriotic War of 2020. The date marks the start of hostilities in the Second Karabakh War, when Azerbaijani forces launched counter-offensives in response to Armenian aggression.

The day was established by presidential decree on December 2, 2020, following Azerbaijan’s victory and the restoration of territories under Armenian occupation for nearly three decades.

Commemorations include a nationwide minute of silence at noon, the raising of national flags, illuminations of public buildings, and memorial ceremonies at Martyrs’ Alleys. The day symbolises both mourning for the nearly 2,900 fallen servicemen and the resilience, unity, and determination of the Azerbaijani people.
