NAM member states have urged to render international assistance to Azerbaijan.
The 19th summit of heads of state and government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was held in Uganda’s capital -Kampala from January 15 to 20. During the summit, Azerbaijan was represented by a delegation led by Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Caliber.Az.
The representatives of NAM member states and international organisations who took part in the event, including the chairman of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s successful four-year chairmanship of the NAM and expressed gratitude to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Although the majority of Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the NAM accounted for the COVID-19 pandemic, Azerbaijan not only successfully met this challenge, but also strengthened the NAM through several initiatives and platforms.
The final document of the 19th NAM summit was adopted as part of the event. In the final document, the heads of state and government of the NAM member states expressed support for the restoration work and reintegration measures carried out by Azerbaijan in the conflict-affected territories and called for rendering international assistance, noting that the problem of unexploded ordnance and mines hampers the work in these territories.
South Sudan was among NAM member states as a result of the steps taken by Azerbaijan during its chairmanship. Thus, there are 121 NAM member states.
During the summit, the chairmanship of the NAM passed from Azerbaijan to Uganda. Azerbaijan will continue making efforts to develop the NAM, in particular, it will continue contributing to the NAM’s activity within the Troika of Chairmen (Previous Chair, Current Chair, and Incoming Chair).
