Baku Initiative Group backs UN resolution on transatlantic slave trade
The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has expressed full support for the United Nations General Assembly resolution “On the Transatlantic Slave Trade,” adopted on March 25.
BIG described the resolution as a critical step toward addressing centuries of racial discrimination and historical injustice against people of African descent. The organization emphasized that the transatlantic slave trade represents “the gravest crime against humanity,” Caliber.Az reports.
“The transatlantic slave trade, as the most brutal manifestation of the colonial system, turned millions of people into slaves and deprived them of economic, cultural, and social development. The consequences of this severe legacy continue to this day,” the statement said.
BIG further stressed that reparations should extend beyond financial compensation, forming part of a broader pursuit of justice. In this context, the group has repeatedly called for official apologies, the return of cultural heritage looted during the colonial era, the establishment of educational and charitable funds, and the creation of international mechanisms to prevent similar crimes in the future.
The organization urged UN member states to take concrete measures in line with the resolution, implement its provisions in practice, deepen dialogue on reparations, and make tangible commitments toward restoring historical justice.
