Normalisation between Baku, Yerevan to ensure regional prosperity EU special rep says

European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar has underlined the importance of achieving a sustainable settlement of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan as it will provide the basis for the prosperity of the entire South Caucasus region.

Klaar made the remark at a panel discussion on "Peace, Development and Connectivity in the South Caucasus" at the Diplomatic Forum in Antalya, per Report.

"I believe that ensuring security and stability in the South Caucasus is a vital interest for all countries in the region, so we offer Azerbaijan and Armenia various options to resolve the situation," Klaar said.

Klaar emphasized that peace does not imply the absence of war, but requires a comprehensive settlement that should be accepted by all sides.

On Ankara's role in normalizing relations between Baku and Yerevan, Klaar said:

"Türkiye can play an important role in the normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, thus giving a strong impetus to the stabilization of the entire South Caucasus region.

I want to emphasize that while the EU, European countries, and most recently Germany, have been and will be ready to support proposals to normalise relations, we are also considering Türkiye and its potential for regional leadership to achieve peace."
