OIC condemns Iranian drone attacks on Nakhchivan, stands with Azerbaijan

The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned the Iranian drone attacks on Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan.

The OIC statement reads: "The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation expresses its strong condemnation of the targeting of the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan by two Iranian drones, one of which hit the Nakhjavan [Nakhchivan] airport building, while the other landed in the vicinity of a school.

The General Secretariat condemns the targeting of civilian facilities and endangering the lives of civilians in violation of sovereignty of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the threat to its security and stability. The General Secretariat affirms its full solidarity with the Republic of Azerbaijan and stands by its side in protecting its sovereignty, security and stability.

The Secretariat also called for the immediate cessation of such provocative actions, warning that they could escalate tensions and destabilize the region.

The OIC emphasised that attacks on member states or threats to their security violate the principles of international law and contradict the foundations of international relations based on good-neighbourliness and mutual respect.

For context, on March 5, drones launched from Iranian territory attacked targets in Nakhchivan. One drone struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, while another fell near a school in the village of Shakarabad. Four civilians were injured in the airport attack.

Following the incident, the Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilu, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. Azerbaijan has stated that it reserves the right to respond.
