One-year anniversary of terrorist attack on Azerbaijani embassy in Iran
Caliber.Az recalls that an armed attack on the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Islamic Republic of Iran was carried out on January 27, 2023, at approximately 08:30 Baku time.
The assailant, armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, breached the guard post and killed the head of security, Orkhan Askerov.
In thwarting the attack, two embassy guards, Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov, were wounded.
Orkhan Askerov is buried in the II Alley of Martyrs. Orkhan Rizvan oglu Askerov was awarded (posthumously) the Medal "For Fatherland" by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated February 3, 2023. Vasif Natig oglu Tagiyev was awarded the Order of Rashadat of the First Degree, and Mahir Kamil oglu Imanov was awarded the Medal "For the Fatherland".
Yasin Huseynzade, the perpetrator of the terrorist act, is in custody.
In the aftermath of the terrorist act, the activities of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran were suspended. On January 29, 2002, the staff of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Iran was evacuated from Tehran to Baku. A total of 53 people returned home. These included embassy staff and their families.
The General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan is closely monitoring the progress of the criminal case on the crime committed in the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is in regular contact with the Iranian side.
Investigating the criminal case was completed according to the Iranian legislation. The case has been submitted to the court for consideration. The prosecutor has requested the most severe punishment for the accused, but the court has not yet made a final decision.
