Orbán calls Azerbaijan “golden reserve” for European Union

02 October 2025 12:25

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has described Azerbaijan as a “golden reserve” for the European Union, highlighting the country’s strategic importance in energy and regional cooperation.

According to domestic media, Orbán made the statement ahead of the 7th European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Copenhagen. He said:

"Azerbaijan is the gold reserve of the European Union because we are facing many challenges in energy, while you are rich [in resources] and cooperate with the EU. You have stable and strong leadership, which is why Azerbaijan is the EU's gold reserve."

The EPC Summit is currently underway at the Bella Centre in Copenhagen, Denmark, bringing together more than 47 heads of state and government from across Europe, including leaders from the European Union and neighbouring countries. The summit is co-chaired by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and European Council President António Costa.

The event serves as a platform for European leaders to engage in strategic and political dialogue, addressing shared challenges and strengthening cooperation across the continent. Security measures have been heightened, with Sweden providing anti-drone systems and radar equipment following recent drone incidents at Danish airports.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is participating in the summit, joining other European leaders in these high-level discussions.
