Over 100 countries apply for e-visa to attend COP29

24 August 2024 14:52

More than 100 countries have applied for an e-visa to participate in the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Ayan Najaf from the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company shared this information during a media seminar on “Effective Communication Strategies for COP29”, Caliber.Az reports per local media sources.

She also provided details on media services and access to the green and blue zones for local media representatives. Najaf announced that local media will be able to collect their accreditation documents starting November 1.

The special COP29 visa allows for a single entry and exit. For re-entry, conference participants will need to apply for a new COP29 visa using their UNFCCC registration number.

COP29 is scheduled to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, this November. The decision to host the conference in Baku was made during the COP28 plenary in Dubai on December 11, 2023. The event is expected to draw around 70,000 to 80,000 international attendees.

The UNFCCC, established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to address human impacts on the climate system. The COP, consisting of 198 member countries, is the main governing body overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC. COP meetings are held annually, with the first conference taking place in Berlin in March 1995, and the UNFCCC Secretariat based in Bonn.
