Pakistan affirms support for Iran, backs joint gas project
The Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson, while underlining his country’s dedication to advancing a joint gas project with Iran, stated that Islamabad’s stance on supporting Tehran and its nuclear deal remains principled.
At his weekly press conference in Islamabad on January 1, Tahir Hussain Andrabi responded to remarks by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian following threatening statements from the US president and the Israeli prime minister, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
He stated that Pakistan’s positions on issues related to Iran and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) are principled and that the country firmly supports Iran.
“During Israel’s aggression against Iran, we have strongly supported the Islamic Republic of Iran and its right to defend itself,” he added.
Regarding the gas pipeline from Iran, the spokesperson also emphasised that Islamabad remains committed to this pipeline, and it looks forward to progress on this issue.
These statements come amid increasing external pressure on Iran, including on its energy projects. Experts view Pakistan’s reaffirmation of its readiness to continue work on the gas pipeline as an important step toward strengthening regional energy security, despite potential threats of international sanctions.
