Philippine envoy: COP29 to yield significant results
Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Azerbaijan, Henry Bensurto Jr., expressed his gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev and the Azerbaijani government for their outstanding organisation of COP29.
He commended the high level of the event and attributed its success to the Azerbaijani people and their leadership, particularly President Ilham Aliyev, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Ambassador Bensurto emphasised that COP29 is one of the largest and most important global events.
"I am looking forward to the remaining days of COP29. I am confident that this event, under Azerbaijan's presidency, will conclude positively. I would like to thank President Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people for all their hard work in preparing for this important occasion," he said.
The ambassador also referenced President Aliyev's declaration of 2024 as the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World," highlighting that the efforts at COP29 align with Azerbaijan’s national approach. "I believe this event will bring about substantial results," he added.
Speaking on the climate challenges facing his country, the ambassador noted that the Philippines, being an archipelago, is at significant risk from rising sea levels.
"As you know, we face numerous climate-related issues in the Philippines. Surrounded by archipelagic waters, we are highly vulnerable to rising sea levels. This is a global issue, not only for the Philippines but for the world. In essence, it is a fight for humanity's future," he stated.
Ambassador Bensurto expressed hope that COP29 would go beyond mere words and commitments, serving as a platform for global collaboration in the fight against climate change.
"We are very hopeful that COP29 will not only be about pledges but will also unite people and nations to respond to this global challenge," he concluded.
This message underscored the urgent need for collective action to address the climate crisis, emphasising the importance of international cooperation in finding solutions.
