PM Asadov: Kazakh grain transit via Azerbaijan shows peace with Armenia in practice

22 October 2025 12:07

Azerbaijan continues to demonstrate its commitment to restoring cooperation and trust in the region, and the transportation of Kazakh grain to Armenia via Azerbaijani territory is the first practical example of this, said Azerbaijani Prime Minister Ali Asadov.

At the opening of the 5th Tbilisi “Silk Road” Forum, Asadov emphasised that opening regional communications, including the connection between Azerbaijan’s main territory and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic — an integral part of the country — will expand the region’s transit capabilities for international freight transport, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

Agreements reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia on a peace agenda hold historic significance for ensuring sustainable cooperation in the region, Asadov said.

The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the new route to be opened in the region under the Washington agreements of August 8 (“Trump Route,” TRIPP) will become a key segment of the Middle Corridor and enhance its role in the global transport network.

“The Azerbaijani side has made a significant contribution in this regard by removing all transit restrictions toward Armenia that remained from the occupation period. The transportation of Kazakh grain to Armenia via Azerbaijani territory is the first practical step in this direction. As President Ilham Aliyev has emphasised, this shows that peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia exists not only on paper but also in practice,” Asadov said.

The announcement follows a landmark trilateral summit in Washington, D.C., on August 8, 2025, hosted by U.S. President Donald J. Trump, where Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders took significant steps toward peace and regional cooperation.

The Washington summit, the first of its kind since the Soviet Union’s collapse, brought together Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and President Trump. The leaders signed a joint declaration outlining a framework for peace, emphasising sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rejection of force. A draft peace agreement, titled “Agreement on Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia,” was initialled by the countries’ foreign ministers, marking a milestone in resolving the decades-long Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.

A centrepiece of the summit was the agreement to establish the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), commonly referred to as the Zangezur Corridor. This transit route will connect mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenia, facilitating intra-state and international trade.
