PM: August 2025 marks beginning of Armenia’s peaceful era Address to the nation

23 August 2025 10:48

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has marked the anniversary of Armenia’s Declaration of Independence with a detailed address on his Facebook page, emphasising the country’s path toward peace, stability, and statehood.

Caliber.Az shares this statement in full to provide insight into the current government’s perspectives on Armenia’s past, its future, and its relations with neighbouring countries.

“On August 23, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR adopted the Declaration of Independence of Armenia. This historic document set in motion the process of affirming our independent statehood. It reflected the collective mood of the political and intellectual elite at the time, carried the imprint of the Karabakh movement, which had begun two years earlier, and was intended to define the key characteristics of the emerging Republic of Armenia,” Pashinyan wrote.

He noted that the ideological foundations of the Declaration were inherently conflictual, shaped by a model of collective patriotism instilled by the Soviet Union since the 1950s, during the height of the Iron Curtain and the Cold War. “This Soviet-created model reflected the southwest-oriented ambitions of the USSR after its victory in World War II, while simultaneously projecting Armenian patriotic ideas beyond the republic to prevent their local manifestation,” Pashinyan explained.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this ideology was disseminated over decades through books, films, plays, and theatrical productions, forming a socio-psychological environment that eventually led to the Karabakh movement. “We all carried this Soviet-created psychology, which in the 1990s was passed down to generations growing up in the independent Republic of Armenia. Its deep, subconscious goal was the strategic impossibility of an independent Armenia, because a country surrounded by constant conflict cannot achieve genuine independence,” he said.

Reflecting on recent history, Pashinyan addressed a question central to understanding Armenia’s trajectory over the past seven years: "Why did the Armenian government and I personally not make concessions before September 2020, which could theoretically have prevented the 44-day war?"

“The main reason was that such concessions would have disproportionately increased our threats and dependencies, inevitably leading to the loss of Armenia’s independence and statehood. We adopted a strategy to preserve Armenia’s independence and turn it into reality. The ideology of real Armenia expresses this strategy,” he explained.

The Prime Minister highlighted the practical outcomes of this approach: “It is under these conditions that peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan became possible, genuine engagement with Turkey became possible, and our relations with Georgia and the Islamic Republic of Iran should deepen. In this context, Armenia becomes a real and interesting partner for the world.”

Pashinyan reaffirmed the importance of Armenia’s sovereignty: “Our state — the Republic of Armenia — with its internationally recognised territory of 29,743 square kilometres, is the most important value we have had for over 500 years. We must prioritise the interests of our state, which must form the foundation and core of our patriotism — for the creative people living in it, for all of you.”

Concluding on a note of optimism, he stated, “August 2025 marks the beginning of a peaceful and prosperous life for the Republic of Armenia. I congratulate all of us on this event.”
