Russian president convenes Security Council as tech threats mount
Russian President Vladimir Putin convened a meeting of the permanent members of Russia's Security Council to discuss threats to the country's information security stemming from the development and deployment of new technologies.
The meeting, held via videoconference, focused on what the Kremlin described as emerging challenges posed by advances in information technologies and their implications for Russia's national security.
Opening the session, Putin outlined the agenda.
"Today we have a very important issue on the agenda: 'Threats and challenges to the information security of the Russian Federation related to the creation and implementation of new information technologies,'" the Russian president said.
The meeting brought together several of Russia's top civilian and security officials, including Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, Presidential Chief of Staff Anton Vaino, Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, presidential aide Nikolai Patrushev, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, and Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Alexander Bortnikov.
