Polish MiG-29 jets intercept Russian reconnaissance aircraft over Baltic Sea For second time in two days
Polish MiG-29 fighter jets intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on October 30, marking the second such incident in as many days, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed.
Speaking at a press conference in Kartuzy, Kosiniak-Kamysz said details of the latest interception were not being disclosed, but emphasised that the threat to Poland was coming from the east, specifically from Russia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Polish media.
He added that there were daily attempts to cross the Polish-Belarusian border illegally, with around 5,000 soldiers stationed in the area each day.
“Today, MiG-29s intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, just as they did yesterday,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
Earlier, on October 30, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported that all available forces had been deployed in response to Russian attacks on targets in Ukraine.
Scramble-ready fighter jets and an early warning aircraft were mobilised, while ground-based air defence and radar systems were placed on high alert. The command said air operations concluded by 10:00 local time.
On October 29, Polish jets also intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying in international airspace without a filed flight plan and with its transponder switched off. The aircraft did not enter Polish airspace, the Operational Command emphasised.
“The actions were carried out swiftly, effectively, and safely, thanks to the high readiness of our forces, the professionalism of our pilots, and the efficient functioning of the air defence system,” the command said.
It added that the Polish Armed Forces remained on constant alert to respond to any threat and to protect the sovereignty of Polish airspace.
