Pre-election campaign for snap parliamentary polls begins in Azerbaijan

08 August 2024 09:36

Starting tomorrow, Azerbaijan will commence election campaigning for the upcoming extraordinary parliamentary elections.

According to Articles 72.3, 74.1.2, 74.1.4, and 75.2 of the Electoral Code, registered candidates, their authorized representatives, political parties with registered candidates, and blocs of political parties will begin their pre-election campaigns 23 days before the voting day, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

These campaigns will stop 24 hours before voting begins.

President Ilham Aliyev signed an order on June 28 to dissolve the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the sixth convocation and call for snap parliamentary elections, scheduled for September 1, 2024. Consequently, pre-election promotion will start on August 9 and conclude on August 31 at 08:00.

Members of parliament in Azerbaijan are elected for five-year terms through a majority electoral system, based on universal, equal, and direct elections by citizens. The recently dissolved parliament was the sixth legislature since 1995.

According to Azerbaijan's constitution, parliamentary elections are typically held every five years on the first Sunday in November. However, a 2016 constitutional amendment allows for shorter terms for deputies elected in snap elections, with subsequent elections held on the first Sunday in November of the fifth year of the parliament’s term.
