President Aliyev’s Washington visit elevates Azerbaijan’s global profile, opens path to regional peace - PM

26 August 2025 16:06

President Ilham Aliyev’s triumphant Washington visit, which drew global attention, has boosted Azerbaijan’s international standing and opened new opportunities for long-term regional peace, Prime Minister Ali Asadov has said.

“President Ilham Aliyev’s high-level meeting in the capital of the world’s most powerful country—Washington, at the White House, where he was received with great respect and courtesy by President Donald Trump, the special sympathy, sincerity, and warm hospitality shown to our head of state, as well as the symbolic presentation of the key to the White House to the leader of Azerbaijan—all of this is a vivid demonstration of the American president’s special regard for Ilham Aliyev’s personality and leadership qualities,” said the prime minister at a special government meeting dedicated to the outcomes of the president’s Washington visit on August 8, Caliber.Az write via local media.

Asadov emphasised that the victories achieved by Azerbaijan’s valiant army on the battlefield under President Aliyev’s leadership, as well as Azerbaijan’s peace initiative, were formally recognised in Washington with the participation and signature of the U.S. president.

He also noted that August 8—etched in golden letters in the history of Azerbaijani diplomacy—marked a long, difficult, but glorious journey of the country toward fulfilling the goals of the peace concept laid down by national leader Heydar Aliyev and fully developed by President Ilham Aliyev in accordance with contemporary challenges.

The prime minister highlighted that these achievements are the logical result of the strong leadership of the president of Azerbaijan, his tireless efforts, unwavering iron will, determination and principled stance, brilliant diplomatic skill, farsightedness, and wise decisions: “At their core are the new geopolitical realities arising from the liberation of Karabakh and all occupied territories, the assurance of our absolute sovereignty, and the strengthening of Azerbaijan’s authority on the international stage.”

He stressed that in the post-conflict period, Azerbaijan’s main foreign policy priority is to ensure sustainable peace, mutual recognition of state borders, and the opening of communication routes.

“In this context, the documents signed in Washington carry special significance. On the one hand, Azerbaijan lays the foundation for long-term peace with Armenia; on the other hand, it elevates strategic partnership with the United States to a new level. This not only strengthens bilateral relations but also further enhances Azerbaijan’s role on the global economic and transport map of the region,” Asadov said.

The prime minister also noted that the joint declaration signed following the trilateral summit in Washington with the participation of the leaders of Azerbaijan, the U.S., and Armenia demonstrates that the peace initiative put forward and promoted by Azerbaijan over many years has received broad international support and official recognition.

“The joint declaration is not merely a document concluding the long-standing armed confrontation between the two countries, but a result of the Azerbaijani people’s struggle for historical justice, an expression of the political-diplomatic strength and international authority of our state,” emphasised Asadov.

The prime minister stressed that Azerbaijan, having independently implemented UN resolutions that had remained on paper for years and restored justice through military action at the cost of the blood of its martyrs, has now become the author of a peace agreement with Armenia, putting a political full stop to the conflict.

“One of the key provisions of the joint declaration concerns the opening of transport and communication routes in the region. After the Patriotic War, President Ilham Aliyev repeatedly emphasised that unhindered land access from mainland Azerbaijan to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic must be ensured. Despite all difficulties, disagreements, and differing positions, this requirement of the head of state has also been accepted by the Armenian side,” the prime minister noted.

Asadov added that the document signed in Washington clearly underscores the importance of uninterrupted and reliable connectivity between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

“For this purpose, a special infrastructure initiative supported by the U.S.—the ‘Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity’ (TRIPP)—is planned. This will create significant changes not only for Azerbaijan but also for the economic and geopolitical map of the entire region,” the prime minister concluded.
