President Tokayev declares CSTO goals achieved under Kazakhstan’s chairmanship

28 November 2024 16:47

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that all tasks set for the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) during Kazakhstan's chairmanship have been successfully completed.

Speaking at the CSTO summit in Astana, Tokayev expressed his gratitude to member states for their cooperation and support, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

“In general, all the tasks facing the CSTO during the presidency of the Republic of Kazakhstan have been fulfilled. Allow me to express my great gratitude for the support in realizing our priorities and fruitful joint work,” he stated.

He addressed the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, who were in attendance.

During its chairmanship, Kazakhstan focused on enhancing coordination among member states, improving mechanisms for responding to crises, and strengthening the CSTO’s ability to combat terrorism, cyberattacks, international crime, and drug trafficking. Tokayev emphasized that meetings of statutory bodies, military exercises, and preventive operations were conducted as planned. He also highlighted that critical issues related to collective security were thoroughly examined by foreign and defence ministers.

As the summit commenced, Tokayev stated that participants would exchange views on international and regional developments and assess their impact on the security of CSTO member states. He explained that the session would also involve reviewing cooperative efforts and summarizing the achievements of the past year. Declaring the council session open, he underlined the importance of the discussions.

A significant item on the agenda was preparing for the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, to be commemorated in 2025. Tokayev noted that a statement from the Collective Security Council on this matter would be presented during the meeting.

The CSTO summit, held on November 28 in Astana, included the presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. However, Armenia’s leadership did not attend, marking their absence from the key event.
