Presidential aide flags political obstacles facing UN Decolonisation Committee
Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, Hikmet Hajiyev, has stated that certain countries are hindering the full functioning of the United Nations Decolonisation Committee.
Speaking at the General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform, Hajiyev emphasised that countries of the Global South have historically suffered significantly from colonialism and neocolonialism, and the issue remains relevant today, according to local media.
He described the situation as “a scar on the face of humanity,” adding that such practices have not been confined to the past and, unfortunately, continue today in new forms and manifestations on the global stage.
The presidential aide recalled that during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement in 2019–2022, the fight against neocolonialism was one of the key priorities.
“We also regretfully note that the UN Decolonisation Committee is still unable to fully carry out its mandate, as some countries resist the decolonisation process,” Hajiyev said.
