Pundit: US president recognises position of Azerbaijani president Farhad Mammadov on Board of Peace
Farhad Mammadov, political analyst and head of the Centre for South Caucasus Studies, noted on his Telegram channel that US President Donald Trump has invited Azerbaijan to become a founding member of his new global initiative, the “Board of Peace,” aimed at advancing international conflict resolution beyond UN mechanisms.
“President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has been invited to join Trump’s Board of Peace as a founding member under the leadership of US President Donald Trump.
What is this?
According to the letter, Trump’s Board of Peace continues the Peace Summit held in Egypt, in which the President of Azerbaijan participated. This format is intended to ensure peace in Gaza and represents the institutionalisation of the US President’s initiative.
It is worth noting that after the Peace Summit, the United States secured the resolution it wanted at the UN Security Council. However, the creation of Trump’s Board of Peace bypasses UN mechanisms.
The success of the Board of Peace initiative will undoubtedly need to continue. The more successful the precedent of Trump’s Board of Peace, the wider its geographical reach could become, and it may serve as a working platform for conflict resolution through agreements made outside the UN and other international bodies.
Why is this important for Azerbaijan?
The President of Azerbaijan has initiated a peace process with Armenia, which is reshaping the South Caucasus region with Azerbaijan in a leading role. In addition, since the middle of last year, relations have been established between the leaders of the United States and Azerbaijan, aimed at improving the quality of relations and removing obstacles along this path.
Through the Board of Peace, the US President identifies his partners around the world, much as President Biden did through the Summit for Democracy. However, President Trump takes a more practical approach to specific issues and may go further than his predecessors.
Despite the uncertainties, we are witnessing an attempt to establish international formats outside the UN, initiated by the world’s most powerful country — the United States. Azerbaijan is on the list of US partners; the US President recognises the position of the President of Azerbaijan,” Farhad Mammadov writes.
