Rare birth of white buffalo calf sparks hope for bison revival in great plains

08 July 2024 06:04

The birth of a white buffalo calf, an exceedingly rare occurrence, has stirred hopes among advocates for revitalizing the species across the Great Plains of America. This event is not only seen as a biological milestone but also holds deep cultural significance among many tribes, where the birth of a white buffalo is considered a sacred omen of change and renewal.

With its cream-colored fur and dark eyes, a tiny member of America's largest native animal species emerged into the limelight, standing unsteadily on its legs.

The birth of a white buffalo calf in June, an exceptionally rare occurrence, is seen by advocates as a potential catalyst for revitalizing the species across the Great Plains of America. For many tribes, the birth of a white bison is a sacred sign of transformation. The herd into which this calf was born holds significant cultural importance as the last remaining wild buffalo herd in North America, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

The herd is embarking on a new phase under the increasing stewardship of indigenous communities, while advocates push for the expansion of bison populations. Once numbering in the tens of millions, the American buffalo, or bison, faced near extinction in the 1800s, dwindling to just 5,000 wild animals today. However, tribes and bison supporters see a hopeful opportunity as Yellowstone National Park, the birthplace of the white calf, considers a proposal to enlarge the wild herd for the first time in decades. The birth of the white calf holds added spiritual significance for buffalo advocates challenging longstanding government policies that prioritize beef ranching over the cultural beliefs of Native American tribes.

A remarkable prophecy unfolded on June 4th, as Yellowstone photography guide Jordan Creech and his clients witnessed the extraordinary sight of a freshly born white buffalo calf taking its first steps in Lamar Valley. Bison calves typically begin walking within minutes of birth and can run alongside their herd within seven minutes.

"It’s the most unique experience I’ve ever had," Creech reflects on the awe-inspiring moment.

Erin Braaten, a photographer of Native American heritage from Kalispell, Montana, also had the privilege of witnessing the calf’s early moments before it blended into the herd.

"I thought I'd have a better chance of capturing Bigfoot than a white bison calf," she shared with BBC News, capturing the rarity and significance of the event.

For the past two millennia, the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakoda tribes have passed down a legend about a woman who arrived in a time of great need. One version recounts two scouts searching for food and buffalo in South Dakota's Black Hills when a mysterious woman appeared. She presented their tribe with a bundle containing sacred gifts, including a pipe carved from red rock, and imparted teachings on how to live and pray.

During her encounter, she underwent several transformations, ultimately appearing as a white buffalo calf with distinctive features—a black nose, black eyes, and black hooves. As she departed, a significant herd of buffalo returned, providing sustenance for the people.

Numerous other tribes also share stories of the white buffalo, viewing its appearance as both a blessing and a cautionary sign.
