Red Cross connects displaced persons in Middle East with families in Azerbaijan
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has successfully facilitated communication between individuals displaced in the Middle East and their families in Azerbaijan.
This was made possible through 20 letters between the two parties, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The process took place between January and June this year, with the ICRC providing essential support in reconnecting families separated by the ongoing crisis in the region.
From January to June 2024, representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited prisoners in Azerbaijan 33 times, conducting inspections at 11 different detention facilities across the country. The visits were part of the ICRC's ongoing efforts to monitor the conditions of detainees and ensure their treatment aligns with international standards.
According to a report from the ICRC, the main objective of these visits was to assess the conditions of confinement, and the treatment of prisoners, and to facilitate communication between detainees and their families.
In addition, during this period, ICRC staff visited 1,127 families of missing persons, providing basic psychosocial support to 53 of these families.
This continued engagement underscores the Red Cross’s vital role in safeguarding the rights and well-being of individuals affected by conflict.
