Russia has revered the January 20 tragedy victims’ memory.

A commemorative event dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy was held in Russia’s St. Petersburg city, the Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with the Diaspora told Report.

The prayers were read in memory of the martyrs of the January 20 tragedy, who died for Azerbaijan’s freedom and independence, at the event, organised by “National-Cultural Autonomy of Azerbaijanis in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region” city public organisation.

Chairman of the organisation Vagif Mamishev, Consul General of Azerbaijan in St. Petersburg Sultan Gasimov spoke about the political processes that led to the tragedy of January 20, 1990, the failure of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) leadership to suppress the liberation movement of our people, and shared memories of those bloody events.

This tragedy, which forever entered the history of the Azerbaijani people as a glorious page of heroism and became a turning point on the path to independence, will never be forgotten.

A photo exhibition reflecting the January 20 events was shown, and candles were lit as part of the event. Our compatriots and guests left entries in the book of condolences.
