Russian envoy praises Azerbaijan’s role in World War II victory
Russia’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mikhail Yevdokimov, has praised Azerbaijan’s contribution to the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany during World War II, highlighting the country’s military, industrial, and humanitarian support during the war.
According to a statement published on the official Telegram channel of the Embassy of Russia in Azerbaijan, Yevdokimov said the Azerbaijani people played a significant role in the fight against fascism alongside other Soviet nations, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“We pay tribute to the contribution of the Azerbaijani people to the common Victory,” the ambassador said. “The sons and daughters of Azerbaijan fought selflessly against the enemy shoulder to shoulder with representatives of other peoples of the Soviet Union.”
Yevdokimov also underscored Azerbaijan’s strategic importance during the war, particularly its oil production. He noted that more than 70% of the Soviet Union’s oil output during the war years came from Azerbaijan, with oil workers in Baku supplying critical fuel to the front lines.
The ambassador added that evacuation hospitals operating in Azerbaijan treated thousands of wounded servicemen throughout the war. He also pointed to the country’s role in the transportation of military and technical supplies delivered to the Soviet Union under the Allied Lend-Lease programme.
