Russian FM doubts EU mission's productivity in Armenia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that the EU mission in Armenia may be ineffective for a number of reasons.

At the final press conference, the Russian minister, in the context of the CSTO's readiness to send a mission to Armenia, noted that the Armenian side prefers to negotiate in the EU on the deployment of civilian observers on a long-term basis, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Russian media.

"This is, in fact, the right of Armenia, but we should not forget that we are talking about the border with Azerbaijan and, probably, if this mission unfolds without the consent of Azerbaijan, it may be counterproductive. Instead of building trust at the border, it can create additional irritants," Lavrov added.

He is confident that solving problems in the Caucasus, as well as in Central Asia and many other regions, should be approached creatively, understanding the complexity of the situation.

The minister added that Armenia assured that there would be no discrepancies with the commitments made within the CSTO framework.

According to him, there was a frank and honest conversation between the presidents and ministers at the CSTO summit in Yerevan.
