Scandinavian diplomats convene in Baku to discuss renewable energy, climate solutions

27 September 2024 20:22

Baku hosted a panel discussion of ambassadors from Scandinavian countries as part of the Nordic Talks: Nordic Green Model initiative.

The event focused on the Scandinavian countries' experiences in transitioning to renewable energy and addressing climate change challenges, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The discussions brought together Tobias Lorentzson, Swedish Ambassador to Azerbaijan; Kirsti Narinen, Finnish Ambassador to Azerbaijan and other South Caucasus countries; Ole Toft, Danish Ambassador to Türkiye and Azerbaijan; and Per Strand Sjaastad, Special Representative for Green Transition at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The panel also welcomed representatives from government agencies, civil society, and the media, fostering a collaborative environment for exploring sustainable practices.

Ambassador Lorentzson emphasized the potential for Scandinavian countries to play a pivotal role in Azerbaijan's green transition, highlighting their long-standing commitment to sustainable development goals at both national and global levels. He remarked, "The experience of the Nordic countries demonstrates that environmental and climate policy can align with economic growth and competitiveness."

As Azerbaijan prepares for the upcoming COP29 conference in November, the ambassador noted that Nordic nations are keen to advocate for effective solutions in international climate negotiations. He stated, "Our region can be a vital partner for Azerbaijan in its ambitious green transition, offering green technology solutions through our companies."

The discussion underscored the shared commitment to sustainable development and the potential for deeper collaboration between Azerbaijan and Nordic countries in the pursuit of a greener future. Following the panel, ambassadors engaged with participants, answering questions and fostering further dialogue on the pressing issues of climate change and energy transition.
