On June 1, delegations led by the Head of the State Border Service of Azerbaijan, Colonel General Elchin Guliyev, and Deputy Commander of Iran’s Law Enforcement Forces, Major General Qasem Rezaei, met on Iranian territory at the Astara border crossing point.
According to the State Border Service, the meeting focused on the current situation along the Azerbaijani–Iranian state border and at crossing points, as well as measures to ensure border security.
Discussions also covered the organisation of security along sections of the border liberated from occupation, and efforts to develop new transport and communications links between Azerbaijan’s East Zangezur Economic Region and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Both sides highly assessed the growing cooperation between the border agencies of the two countries, stressing the importance of further strengthening coordination in combating smuggling, the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, and other forms of cross-border crime.
The delegations noted that such meetings make a significant contribution to the development of ties between border services and to the reinforcement of mutual cooperation.
