Serious work underway to oblige Armenia to pay compensation for damage caused to Azerbaijan AIR Centre expert says

28 September 2023 13:51

Azerbaijan carries out serious work to ensure Armenia's payment of compensation for the damage caused to Azerbaijan.

Vasif Huseynov, head of a department at the Center of Analysis of International Relations (AIR Centre), made the statement during presentation of the report prepared by Regional Human Rights and Media Center Public Union on Bashlibel massacre, according to Report.

According to him, Armenia has always denied and still denies its responsibility for the events and puts all the blame on the separatist regime: "However, international law clearly states that it is the Armenian state that bears direct responsibility for the events. The European Court of Human Rights has also confirmed that the Armenian state was a direct participant in the incident 8 years ago. Thousands of our citizens were killed during the occupation of Azerbaijani lands, and the Bashlibel tragedy is one of such events".

Huseynov noted that since Armenia is recognised as a responsible party in the occupation, it will be obliged to pay compensation for the damage caused to civilian objects in the future: "Azerbaijan is currently carrying out serious work in this direction".

Huseynov also said that it is planned to erect a monument on the graves of those who died during the Bashlibel massacre.

He recalled that more than 200 people froze to death while fleeing the Murov mountain in Kalbajar:

"At the end of 1993, ethnic cleansing was carried out in Kalbajar. However, 62 people did not leave Bashlibel. 32 of them lost their lives. One person died of a heart attack. 30 people managed to come to Dashkasan district after 113 days of siege. Born in 1890, Alasgar Kazimov did not leave his village and lived under siege."
