Slovak PM Fico backs President Aliyev’s stance on European Parliament

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has voiced support for Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s stance toward the European Parliament and criticized the activities of the European institution.

Speaking in a video recorded aboard the Slovak government aircraft on May 9 while returning from visits to Russia, Armenia, and Bavaria, Fico discussed the outcomes of his recent trips and touched upon Azerbaijan and Ilham Aliyev’s remarks regarding the European Parliament.

“By the way, in Yerevan I witnessed an example of sovereign foreign policy — this time from Azerbaijan, whose president sharply criticized the European Parliament over various declarations and resolutions adopted against the country,” the Slovak prime minister said.

According to Fico, the Azerbaijani president “told the truth.”

“President Aliyev told the truth when he said that the European Parliament should first and foremost deal with European problems — and we have more than enough of them — instead of spreading lies and interfering in the affairs of others,” he noted.

The Slovak prime minister also criticized a recent European Parliament resolution concerning Bratislava.

“I am sending the same message from Slovakia to the European Parliament, especially in connection with its latest ‘masterpiece,’ when it recommended that the European Commission suspend the allocation of European funds to us,” Fico added.
