SOCAR Green explores green hydrogen production potential
SOCAR Green has announced the launch of research to evaluate the potential for green hydrogen production in Azerbaijan.
“Committed to reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy, SOCAR Green is actively exploring the potential for green hydrogen production in the country. To assess its feasibility, we have launched comprehensive studies and evaluations, which align with Azerbaijan's broader goals of diversifying its energy portfolio and reducing dependence on fossil fuels,” SOCAR Green stated, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The company is exploring various uses for green hydrogen, including its export, integration with the production of green ammonia and fertilizers, and use in energy storage systems to identify the most promising areas for development.
"In this effort, we are collaborating with various international partners in this respect," SOCAR Green added.
According to a recent market study prepared by consulting firm Advisian, with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Azerbaijan holds significant potential for developing a low-carbon hydrogen economy. The report highlights the country’s vast renewable energy resources, both onshore and offshore.
The study confirmed the commercial viability of green hydrogen production and identified opportunities for supplying it to regional energy markets, including the EU. The report also noted the potential applications for hydrogen in national consumption, explored prospects for the adoption of hydrogen technologies in Azerbaijan's energy and industrial sectors, and assessed the cost of production (LCOH), while evaluating potential export routes.
